How to Measure a Room for Flooring
Measure the length and width of each rectangular section, multiply them to get square feet, then add 5% to 15% extra for cuts, waste, and future repairs.
Basic room measurement steps
- Measure the longest length of the room in feet.
- Measure the widest width of the room in feet.
- Multiply length by width to get square feet.
- Measure closets, alcoves, hallways, and bump-outs separately.
- Add the sections together and apply your waste percentage.
How much waste to add
- 5% to 8% for simple rectangular rooms
- 10% for most plank flooring projects
- 12% to 15% for angled layouts, stairs, or many cuts

Do closets count in flooring square footage?
Yes. Measure closets and small connected areas separately, then add them to the main room.
Should I round up to full boxes?
Yes. Flooring is normally sold by box, so round up after adding waste.
