How this estimate works

This calculator turns your project dimensions into a planning quantity, then applies a waste factor so the final number is closer to what you can actually order.

  • Area = length x width
  • Adjusted area = area x (1 + waste percentage)
  • Boxes needed = adjusted area / square feet per box

Example

A 12 ft by 15 ft room with 10% waste needs 198 sq ft of flooring, or 9 boxes if each box covers 23 sq ft.

Common planning notes

  • Irregular rooms should be split into rectangles and added together.
  • Stairs, closets, hallways, and transitions need separate measurements.
  • Keep spare material for repairs, especially for discontinued flooring.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Use 5% to 10% extra for simple layouts and 10% to 15% for angled layouts, plank patterns, or many cuts.

Can I use this calculator for carpet?

Yes for a rough square-foot estimate, but carpet roll width and seams may require a separate layout.

Do closets count in flooring measurements?

Yes. Measure closets, alcoves, and hallways separately, then add them to the main room area.
