How this estimate works

This calculator turns your project dimensions into a planning quantity, then applies a waste factor so the final number is closer to what you can actually order.

  • Area = length x width
  • Tile area = tile length x tile width / 144
  • Adjusted area = area x (1 + waste percentage)
  • Tiles needed = adjusted area / tile area

Example

A 6 ft by 8 ft bathroom floor using 12 in by 24 in tile with 10% waste needs about 27 tiles.

Common planning notes

  • Diagonal patterns, small rooms, niches, and complex cuts usually need more waste.
  • Always verify box coverage because nominal tile sizes can differ from actual sizes.
  • Order all boxes from the same lot when color consistency matters.

Frequently asked questions

How much tile waste should I add?

Use about 10% for simple straight layouts and 15% or more for diagonal patterns, small rooms, or many cuts.

Should grout spacing be included?

For most estimates, tile size and waste percentage are enough. Very large projects may benefit from a detailed layout.

Can I use this for wall tile?

Yes. Enter the wall area dimensions, then choose the tile size and waste factor.
